Microsoft Tag or Standard QR Code?

I’ve got an upcoming project and am having a hard time deciding between which technology to use here.

At first glance I thought that Microsoft’s Tag would just be another closed technology to deal with and felt like it just fragments the mainstream adoption of a standardized (and open) QR reader.

After a bit of experimentation I realize that Microsoft Tag gives me:

- Higher Chance of Working

- Better Tracking/Analytics Reports

- Customization of the Design

-Smaller Footprint (More accurate at smaller sizes that Standard QR Codes)

And several other advantages.. but why do I still feel uneasy about going this route?

Is it because I’m hoping the rumors about Facebook utilizing QR Codes will be true, thus creating more awareness/usage of the QR technology with their user base of 450million+ and growing? Imagine of the Facebook mobile app included a QR Readers.   Google has already jumped on board.  Could this really mean mainstream for QR?

Is it because I feel a bit dirty limiting consumers to a proprietary reader? Or that I’m afraid smartphones will soon all include embedded reader software, that will most likely be QR based and not MS Tag (Windows Mobile Excluded)  I am impressed with the growing list of Supported platforms/devices for the MS Tag Reader.. but it still isn’t an OPEN technology.

Does anyone have code scan data to show usage between the two?

I realize there are several other things to discuss here, but I need to send a design for a kiosk to a printer in a few hours, and at the end of the day just want a technology that gives me flexibility but mainly allows for the opportunity for consumers to be able to scan and access something that helps them out and extends their experience with the product I represent.

Anyone out there have any thoughts?
